This week, 24 new Winogradsky columns came into being, with help from the KS2 classes at my local school 🦠💚

As they all needed egg yolks, back at home I'm now making meringues! Lots and lots of meringues!!!

I have no idea how the students mud jars will end up, but here's a pic of one of my winter experiments a couple of years ago with soil/water from the same river...

A Winogradsky Column (glass bottle filled with mud). Algae has turned the glass at the top orange and green. The top layer of the soil has a thick black stripe. Deeper the mud is specked with pockets of olive green and yellow. At the bottom there is a deep red layer.
