I bought Apple Magic Trackpad just to learn that it doesn’t work on Sonoma (last year’s macOS). Apple “fixed” the problem by just updating system requirement to this year’s macOS. And forcing me to update.

I'm just putting this here for posterity, because it doesn't really matter as Apple has obviously decided not to support their original tech specs and instead just change them. But for what its worth, if you look at the page snapshot from archive.org on November 4th, 2024 the System Requirements said "Bluetooth-enabled Mac with OS X 10.11 or later". Then if you look at the snapshot from November 18th, 2024 the System Requirements were updated to say "Mac with macOS 15.1 or later", which is what it says today on the live site. So at some point during that two week period, I'm guessing someone at Apple noticed that there was a compatibility issue (possibly because of this post), and instead of pushing out an update to support their original system requirements, they just quietly updated the listing. That's super frustrating for people who have a company computer that is update locked to an older version, but I doubt they will do anything more to support older machines.

@nikitonsky Which version is this? Is it the new USB-C one? (I've been using two Lightning versions fine with Sonoma.)

@nikitonsky Oh, yes. I see it is USB-C. That's terrible. Sounds like Apple haven't ported the new driver to earlier OS versions, which is really weird, given the developer resources they have.

@jgrg yep, it’s basically exactly same device (which worked fine up to Big Sur at least) but with type-c and now it’s somehow latest macos only

@jgrg @nikitonsky Apple doesn’t have a lot of developer resources for these things.

I genuinely wouldn’t be surprised if one person worked on it part time and moved on.

Apple is insanely structured internally for non-flagship development tasks.

They are basically a startup resource wise which made sense 15-20 years ago but does not now.

It’s very stupid they didn’t backport the driver but they probably have some “no new features” rule and the poor bastard was just following it.
